LUNENBURG -- It's true this is all brand new for the Lunenburg Pee Wee Bengals.
Don't let the lack of experience fool you, however. Lunenburg plans to be ready.
The Bengals Football team will travel to Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., this afternoon to play in the New England Regional Division 2 Super Bowl of the American Youth Football League. A trip to Orlando, Fla., to play in the national championship playoffs is on the line.
The Bengals' opponent will be the Rhode Island champion Fairlawn Cardinals. Fairlawn is based in Pawtucket, R.I., and plays in the Blackstone Valley Youth Football Conference. The Cardinals enter Saturday's game with a record of 10-1. Lunenburg comes in at 12-1 after steamrolling through the competition the past three weeks.
"We feel confident going in. We know we'll have to go out and play well," Lunenburg head coach Bill Nash said on Tuesday. "I believe in our kids. I believe they can get it done. I'm confident their desire to win will drive them toward another championship."
With each passing week, the Bengals' players and coaches are turning more and more people into believers.
It hasn't mattered who has been lined up against the Bengals this postseason. Lunenburg has proven one game at a time that it belongs where it is today. The Bengals have been equally impressive on both sides of the Football and are just 40 minutes of solid Football away from a trip to the Sunshine State.
"The key will be for us to try to cut down their speed and tackling," Nash said. "Fairlawn is a good team. We know they are fast and love to run to the outside. We have to be able to contain them on the defensive side of the ball."
Last week, in the regional playoffs, New Hampshire champion Nor-Rock quickly found out what the teams in Massachusetts already know. Lunenburg found the end zone early and often as it thumped the visiting Vikings 40-0 to set up this today contest with Fairlawn. Equally impressive was the defense's ability to rip through the Vikings' offensive line.
Nash didn't hesitate to dish out credit to offensive coordinator Wally Kurtz and defensive coordinator Brian Nash.
"Hats off to Brian, he's done an outstanding job with the defense," said Bill Nash. "The kids have really responded well to him. They're listening and they're very active. Offensively, Wally has done a great job, too. We have a very good coaching staff. "
The Bengals roster is loaded with athletes who play both offense and defense, including players such as Connor Kurtz, Nathan Nash, Bobby Colgate, Jeremy Nash and Tom Wagner.
Even though a handful of players may make the highlight reel each week, Bill Nash was quick to point out the Bengals wouldn't be in the situation they're in if not for the hard work and contributions of everyone on the roster, including players such as Drew Patno, Joey Kapp, Luke McDonald, Cody Lanzilotti, Ryan Johnson, Max Corbett and Adam Hyde among others.
Much like it has all season, the Bengals coaching staff will be relying on both sides of the ball to play well today.
