The front office worked hard in the offseason to improve the depth on defense, signing free agent linebackers Travis LaBoy and Clark Haggans and drafting cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
Those efforts appear to be successful, but they weren't able to address needs on offense. And the lack of depth at some positions is startling.
That's especially true at offensive tackle. Mike Gandy (left) and Levi Brown (right) are entrenched as the starters, but a look at their backups at camp gives concern in the event of injury.
The backup right tackle is Elliot Vallejo, who spent last year on the practice squad. An undrafted rookie last year, Vallejo has shown signs of developing into a serviceable player, but he's not going to be ready this year.
The backup left tackle is Peter Clifford, an undrafted rookie from Michigan State. As it stands now, a long-term injury at one of the tackle spots will necessitate making two moves on the offensive line.
It likely would mean guard Reggie Wells moving out to tackle, with Elton Brown moving in at guard. Brown played some tackle last year when Levi Brown was hurt, but he's a much better guard.
The Cardinals front office is hoping that a veteran offensive tackle or two will become available when teams make cuts shortly before the season. But the choices might be few. Teams have more cap room than ever, and they aren't in the habit of letting solid veterans go.
